Gun Free South Africa Congratulates Founding Leader Adèle Kirsten on Receiving the Order of Luthuli in Bronze
Gun Free South Africa (GFSA) proudly and warmly congratulates one of its founding members and former Director, Adèle Kirsten, on being awarded the Order of Luthuli in Bronze, one of South Africa’s highest national honours, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to peace, democracy, justice, and community safety. This is a deeply significant and proud moment for Gun Free South Africa’s Board, staff, former colleagues, partners, supporters, donors, and the many communities across South Africa whose lives have been touched by the organisation’s work over the past 31 years. This honour is a fitting recognition of a life devoted to principled activism, public service, and the pursuit of a safer and more just society.
Kirsten’s contribution to South Africa’s democratic and social justice journey spans decades. Her activism began in the anti-apartheid struggle, including through the End Conscription Campaign, where she stood for peace, conscience, and human dignity during one of the country’s most difficult periods.
In 1995, as South Africa was shaping its young democracy, she became one of the founder members of Gun Free South Africa, helping to establish an organisation that is committed to reducing gun violence through evidence-based advocacy, policy reform, public engagement, and accountability. Over many years of leadership, Adèle helped shape GFSA into a niche, respected and enduring civil society voice on firearm violence prevention. Her public service extended beyond organisational leadership.
Following the tragedy of Marikana, Adèle served on the Marikana Panel of Experts, contributing to the critical national reflection on policing, accountability, crowd management, public safety, and democratic governance. Her participation reflected the same values that have defined her public life: integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to human life and justice. Her contribution has also extended beyond South Africa, through engagement in regional and global conversations on violence prevention, small arms control, and public safety, helping ensure that South African experience and expertise contributed meaningfully to international dialogue.
This recognition comes at a poignant time. As South Africa marks Africa Month, the continent reflects on peace, justice, democratic governance, and the collective aspiration to silence the guns. As the country prepares for Child Protection Week, we are reminded that violence continues to rob too many children and young people of safety, stability, and opportunity. It also comes as South Africa continues to confront difficult questions about violence, criminality, political killings, governance failures, and accountability. In this context, honouring leadership that has consistently advocated for peace, prevention, and safer communities carries particular resonance.
While this honour rightly recognises Kirsten’s distinguished contribution, Gun Free South Africa also acknowledges the broader community of survivors, families, activists, researchers, policymakers, health practitioners, community leaders, and partners who have contributed to violence prevention efforts over many years.
Meaningful social change is always collective.
As a specialised South African organisation focused on firearm violence prevention, Gun Free South Africa continues to advance state accountability, mobilise communities for safety, shape public understanding through evidence-informed advocacy, and strengthen its institutional capacity in pursuit of reduced gun violence. From local communities to national policy spaces, and in continental and global conversations, the organisation remains committed to safer communities and stronger public safety systems. Adèle Kirsten’s recognition is both personal and historic. It honours an exceptional individual whose leadership has left an indelible mark on South Africa’s public life and affirms the enduring importance of the work to prevent violence and protect life.
Gun Free South Africa congratulates Kirsten with deep respect, gratitude, and admiration.
Her legacy endures.
The mission continues.
Fewer guns. Fewer deaths.
