Letter by Gun Free SA, the Institute for Security Studies and the Human Sciences Research Council requesting that all polling stations across South Africa be declared as Firearms Free Zones under the Firearms Control Act (2000) during national elections on 8 June 2019 as a practical step to protect the lives of electoral officials and voters, and to send a message that violence will not be tolerated and that firearms – because of their lethality – pose a particular threat to holding free and fair elections, and will not be tolerated.
